Dolomites
The next morning, we got up early and started our journey to Cortina in the Dolomites. The town is just a few miles from the Austrian Border. Some people actually walked to Austria! Everyone was pretty excited on the train. We had this whole car to ourselves and were glued to the windows watching the amazing scenery.
Orthodox church typical of northern Italy. this one was especially beautiful, I thought. I sketched this one while waiting for a bus and some random German man offered to buy it! if only I spoke German I would have sold it!!!! Raphael told me later that that's what he wanted.
Cortina with the mountains in the background.
This is the main town square. Our hotel is just off to the right on the square.
Raphael, Kristen, Joel & I went down to the river to sketch. I got caught up in this beautiful campanula. I used ink and watercolor. It's still pretty challenging to mix colors.
In addition to the flowers, the fall foliage was spectacular!
This is my new favorite plant....I must figure out what it is!!!!!
Ranuncula!!!!!
We spent the whole day Saturday hiking. Henry, Matt, Isby, Josh and Khai had left at 6 am to hike to the top of the highest peak in the area...the rest of us went for this wonderful day hike. ON our walk, a few of us decided we needed to get to the base of this mountain.
The view from the slide out to Cortina (in the valley) and more mountains. Note the meadow to the right...we end up there later in the day...it's across the river. What an amazing place!!!!
Ya baby!!! I made it!!!!
We went down to the meadow and joined the others for lunch. A group took off, while some of us stuck around and sketched. I was moved to do another botanical (what a surprise!).
The group continued to dwindle, and alas Joel & I were the sole survivors in our pack. We managed to finally get down to the river, and sat on a rock out here and painted this scene below. The red tree was absolutely glowing...so gorgeous.
The white draw to the right is where we had been hiking in the morning! We're now on the meadow across the valley looking back over.
View from the meadow to Cortina.
The sunset on the way home was spectacular.
I have to say I loved this area!!!! I will definitely be back to this place some day!
